BREAKING:

Zimbabwean footballers have paid tribute to South African international Jayden Adams following his death at the age of 25, describing him as a talented player whose humility and commitment to football earned him admiration across the region.

Adams died on Saturday, just weeks after representing Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. South African authorities have confirmed his death, while police said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

The midfielder enjoyed a rapid rise in his professional career after making his name at Stellenbosch before joining reigning African champions Mamelodi Sundowns in 2025. His performances earned him a place in the South African national team.

During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Adams featured in South Africa’s group-stage matches and helped Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time in the country’s history.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) joined the football community in mourning the midfielder, expressing condolences to his family, club and South African football.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of the 25-year-old midfielder and extend our sympathies to the South African Football Association (SAFA), Adams’ family, his club Mamelodi Sundowns and the wider South African football fraternity,” ZIFA said.

Triangle forward Talent Chawapihwa described Adams’ death as a major loss to African football and remembered him for both his ability and character.

“This is heartbreaking news for everyone who loves football. Jayden was a talented player with a bright future, but more importantly he was a respectful and humble person. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in peace,” said Chawapihwa.

AmaZulu forward Thandowenkosi Ngwenya said Adams’ contribution to football would continue to be remembered by those who knew him and those who watched him play.

“Football has lost one of its own. Jayden played the game with passion and commitment every time he stepped onto the pitch. Moments like these remind us that life is bigger than football. We stand with his loved ones during this difficult period and pray they find strength,” he said.

Zimbabwe international Devine Lunga also paid tribute, saying Adams had earned the respect of fellow professionals through his dedication to the game and his conduct away from the pitch.

“It is difficult to find the right words at a time like this. Jayden touched many lives through football and his character off the field matched the quality he showed on it. We have lost a brother in the game. My sincere condolences go to his family and everyone affected by this tragic loss,” said Lunga.
