A ZIMBABWEAN national has been arrested in Johannesburg after police allegedly uncovered an operation producing fraudulent South African identity documents.
The suspect was arrested on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following information received by police about a man allegedly recruiting people seeking South African smart identity cards and other forged documents.
Police said the alleged operation also involved the production of fraudulent bank statements and payslips.

After verifying the information, police launched an operation in the Hillbrow policing precinct.
The operation led to the search of premises allegedly linked to the suspect and the seizure of several items believed to be connected to the production of fraudulent documents.
Police seized six South African smart identity cards, 22 blank South African smart identity cards, a laptop and a smart card printing machine.
A Zimbabwean national was subsequently arrested in connection with the alleged document fraud operation.
Police said the suspect is expected to appear in court, although details of the charges and the date of the court appearance had not yet been released.
Investigations into the case are continuing as authorities work to establish the full extent of the alleged operation and whether other people were involved.
The arrest comes amid continued efforts by South African authorities to crack down on the production and use of fraudulent identity documents.
