HARARE — Three bodies were retrieved early Monday morning from a muddy sewage pool in Budiriro 3, Harare, in an incident that has shocked residents in the suburb.

According to residents, the muddy excavation site had been left open following the sewer works.
When a news crew arrived at the scene on Monday morning, members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police were collecting the bodies from the sewage pool.
A resident who requested anonymity said the incident involving one of the victims began when two young men were walking home from nearby shops.
According to the resident, one of the young men stepped onto the muddy surface covering the sewage pool and suddenly sank.
“Emergency Services came and the diver went into the pool looking for the young man,” said the resident.
However, during the first rescue attempt, the diver reportedly recovered the body of a young girl who had allegedly gone missing around 6pm the previous day while on her way to local shops.
The resident said the diver entered the muddy pool a second time and retrieved the body of an older man instead of the young man who had initially been reported trapped.
“On the third attempt, that is when the rescue diver retrieved the young man’s body,” the resident said.
The identities of the deceased had not yet been released by authorities at the time of publication. Police were still at the scene conducting their work, while circumstances surrounding the deaths remained unclear.
More details are expected to emerge as investigations continue into the incident in Budiriro 3.
