The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) is investigating suspected illegal mining activities at a residential property in Marlborough after several people were arrested and extensive damage was discovered at the site.
Ward 41 Councillor Kudzai Kadzombe said investigations are ongoing following reports that mining activities were taking place at a house located at No. 4 Wollington Close.
Speaking in an interview, Cllr Kadzombe said council officials recently visited the property after receiving reports of suspected mining on the premises. She said EMA is compiling a report that will be submitted to the Permanent Secretary.

According to Cllr Kadzombe, officials were informed during the inspection that eight people had been arrested in connection with the matter.
“When we visited the site, we were informed that eight people had been arrested. Unfortunately, those arrested were women and children, not the individuals who were allegedly carrying out the mining. They are due to appear in court today,” she said.
Cllr Kadzombe said one of the suspects claimed that a clay pot believed to have been used for ritual purposes had been broken at the property. However, she noted that the allegation has not been independently verified.
She also said the property belongs to a woman who is currently living in Borrowdale and was reportedly unaware of the extent of the damage allegedly caused by the mining activities.
During the inspection, officials found extensive damage to the property. According to Cllr Kadzombe, several windows had been broken, parts of the roof had been damaged and approximately nine pits had been dug within the residential premises.
“They have stopped mining, and I believe those who were carrying out the mining have fled because they cannot be located,” she said.
EMA is expected to complete its investigations and submit its findings to the relevant authorities. Meanwhile, the suspects who were arrested were expected to appear in court as investigations into the alleged illegal mining activities continue.
