Three people died after a cabin caught fire at Lone Mine 50 Compound in Gwanda. The victims were burnt beyond recognition and taken for post-mortem examinations. Police are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Three people died after a cabin they were sleeping in caught fire at Lone Mine 50 Compound in Makwe, Gwanda, Matabeleland South province, last week. The incident occurred on March 19 at around 10PM, according to police.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the fatal fire, stating that the victims were inside the cabin when it was engulfed in flames. National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the fire resulted in the deaths of all three occupants.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fire incident which occurred on 19 March 2026 at around 2200 hours at Lone Mine 50 Compound, Makwe, Gwanda, in which three people died after a cabin they were sleeping in caught fire,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

Police reported that the bodies of the victims were burnt beyond recognition due to the intensity of the fire. As a result, identification could not be immediately established at the scene.

Following the incident, the remains of the deceased were taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital mortuary. The bodies are expected to undergo post-mortem examinations as part of the ongoing investigation.

“The victims were burnt beyond recognition, and their bodies were taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem,” Commissioner Nyathi said.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire. Police indicated that investigations are currently underway to establish how the blaze started and whether any factors contributed to its spread.

The incident took place within the Lone Mine 50 Compound, an area located in Makwe, under Gwanda in Matabeleland South province. Police have not released further details about the victims or the condition of the structure after the fire.

No additional information has been provided regarding possible witnesses or emergency response actions taken at the time of the incident. Police have also not indicated whether other properties were affected.

Commissioner Nyathi reiterated that investigations remain ongoing. The findings are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the fire and provide further details on the events of that night.
