BREAKING:

South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) has intercepted a consignment of methaqualone worth nearly R1 billion at the Beitbridge border post in what authorities described as one of the country’s biggest drug seizures.

The drugs were discovered during an operation coordinated through the BMA’s National Targeting Centre after officials identified a truck travelling through Zimbabwe toward the Beitbridge border. South African authorities said the vehicle was accompanied by Malawian nationals.

Home affairs minister Leon Schreiber confirmed the seizure and described it as “likely the single biggest breakthrough against the drug trade in South African history.”

According to Schreiber, officers were already positioned at the border post when the truck arrived following intelligence gathered during the investigation. The operation formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen border security and crack down on cross-border crime.

Authorities then directed the truck through a sophisticated scanner installed at the border facility. The scanner detected a hidden compartment inside the vehicle, leading officers to uncover the illegal consignment.

A total of 713,000 grams of methaqualone was seized during the operation. Officials estimated the street value of the drugs at R998.2 million, which is approximately US$60.4 million.

Following the discovery, members of the Hawks and K9 units were called to the scene to assist with the investigation and handling of the drugs. The operation then moved into a criminal investigation stage.

Three Malawian nationals were arrested in connection with the case and taken to Musina Police Station. The Hawks are expected to continue investigations into the origin and intended destination of the consignment.

Schreiber said the seizure highlighted the growing role of intelligence-led investigations and technology in border security operations. He said authorities were making progress in strengthening law enforcement systems at ports of entry.

“This demonstrates that the combination of intelligence-led investigations, digital transformation, and the commitment of the BMA is systematically rebuilding the rule of law at our borders,” Schreiber said.

The latest seizure places renewed attention on the Beitbridge border post, one of the busiest crossing points in southern Africa. Authorities across the region continue to face challenges linked to smuggling, illegal trafficking and organised cross-border crime.

South African officials have increasingly relied on technology, intelligence systems and coordinated law enforcement operations to detect illegal activities at border posts. The use of truck scanners, K9 units and specialised investigative teams has become central to border security operations.

The case is now expected to proceed through further investigations led by the Hawks as authorities work to determine the full network linked to the drug consignment and whether additional arrests may follow.
