BREAKING:

HARARE – A Russian national appeared before a Harare magistrate on Wednesday facing human trafficking and immigration-related charges after allegedly facilitating the travel of a Zimbabwean man to Russia.

Leonid Koftev, 36, appeared before Harare magistrate Jessie Kufa and was charged with human trafficking, failing to comply with immigration conditions and operating an unregistered employment agency. The court remanded him in custody until June 9.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Koftev was intercepted at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on Monday while allegedly facilitating the victim’s travel to Russia. The State alleges that he was involved in arrangements that would have enabled the Zimbabwean man to leave the country.

Court papers state that detectives received information indicating that Koftev was working with an accomplice identified only as “Constantine,” who is reportedly based in Russia. Investigators allege the two were involved in recruiting Zimbabwean citizens to travel to Russia.

Prosecutors did not provide details in court regarding the specific conduct that forms the basis of the human trafficking charge. However, the allegations presented before the court relate to the recruitment and travel arrangements made for the Zimbabwean victim.

The court heard that Koftev arrived in Zimbabwe on May 28 using a 30-day holiday visa. He reportedly stayed in Mandara, a suburb of Harare, during his time in the country before his arrest.

Prosecutors allege that Koftev recruited one victim and arranged several travel-related requirements. These included obtaining a Russian electronic visa, purchasing airline tickets and securing hotel accommodation in Russia. The victim was reportedly scheduled to depart Zimbabwe on an Ethiopian Airlines flight.

According to the State, Koftev collected the victim from Budiriro on Monday and drove him to Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. Detectives monitoring the case allegedly intercepted the pair before the journey could proceed.

Investigators reportedly recovered several documents from Koftev’s possession during the interception. These included the victim’s Russian e-visa, airline tickets and a hotel booking confirmation that prosecutors say were linked to the planned trip.

The State opposed bail, arguing that Koftev presents a flight risk because of his foreign connections. Prosecutors also told the court that releasing him could result in interference with witnesses and ongoing investigations connected to the case.

The matter remains before the courts, with Koftev expected to remain in custody until his next appearance on June 9. The case has drawn attention to allegations involving the recruitment of Zimbabwean citizens for travel to Russia and will continue to be monitored as legal proceedings progress.
