Zimbabwe Warriors captain Marvelous Nakamba has joined Greek top-flight side Panetolikos after leaving English Championship club Sheffield Wednesday at the end of the 2025/26 season.
The 32-year-old midfielder joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer in February 2026 but spent only part of the season with the club before becoming a free agent. Sheffield Wednesday confirmed in its official retained list in May that Nakamba was among the players leaving Hillsborough when their contracts expired.
Nakamba’s move to Greece gives the experienced Zimbabwe international another opportunity to continue his European career after spells in France, the Netherlands, Belgium and England. Greek football reports had previously indicated that Panetolikos were in advanced discussions with the midfielder before the move was completed.

Reports from Greece indicate that Nakamba has agreed a contract with Panetolikos running until June 2028. The move sees him join the Greek club after a short spell at Sheffield Wednesday, where he made a limited number of appearances during the second half of the 2025/26 campaign.
Sheffield Wednesday officially announced Nakamba’s arrival on February 2, describing him as an experienced defensive midfielder. The club said at the time that the Zimbabwe international would remain with the Owls for the remainder of the campaign.
Before joining Wednesday, Nakamba had spent three seasons with Luton Town after initially arriving at Kenilworth Road on loan in January 2023. He helped Luton secure promotion to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs before making the move permanent. Sheffield Wednesday’s announcement also noted that he had made 58 Premier League appearances for Aston Villa during his four seasons at the club.
Nakamba’s European career began with French club AS Nancy before he moved to the Netherlands to join Vitesse Arnhem. He later switched to Belgian side Club Brugge, where he won the Belgian league title during the 2017/18 season.
His performances at Club Brugge earned him a move to Aston Villa in 2019. He subsequently established himself as an experienced midfielder in English football before his move to Luton Town.
The midfielder’s time at Luton was particularly significant. He became a popular figure at the club and was part of the team that secured Premier League promotion after beating Coventry City in the Championship play-off final at Wembley in 2023.
Nakamba’s international career has also made him an important figure for Zimbabwe. Sheffield Wednesday described him as the Warriors’ captain and noted that he had made his international debut at the age of 21. The club said he had earned 36 caps and represented Zimbabwe at three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, including the 2025 edition where he wore the captain’s armband.
His departure from Sheffield Wednesday came after the club’s difficult 2025/26 campaign. The Owls confirmed in May that Nakamba was among several players whose contracts had expired and who would leave the club.
Greek reports subsequently linked Nakamba with Panetolikos as the club looked to strengthen its midfield. Gazzetta Greece reported in July that Panetolikos were in advanced talks with the Zimbabwean defensive midfielder and viewed him as an option to fill a gap in the number six position.
Other Greek reports also highlighted Nakamba’s experience in major European leagues, including his time in the Premier League with Aston Villa and Luton Town. His record in England and Belgium made him an experienced option for Panetolikos as the club prepared for the new season.
Nakamba now begins another chapter of his career in Greece, where he will bring experience from several European leagues to Panetolikos. The move also keeps the Warriors captain playing in Europe as he continues his club career.
For Zimbabwe, Nakamba’s move represents another opportunity for one of the country’s most experienced international players to remain active at a competitive level. His leadership and experience will remain important to the Warriors as the national team continues its international programme.
The move to Panetolikos follows a brief stay at Sheffield Wednesday but extends Nakamba’s career in European football. With the reported agreement taking him through June 2028, the Zimbabwe midfielder now has the opportunity to establish himself in the Greek top flight and add another chapter to a career that has already taken him across several European leagues.
