The England international, 21, had been under contract until 2027, with an option for an extra year. Talks over improved terms had continued in recent months as United moved to protect the future of one of their academy graduates. The new agreement now gives the club long-term stability in midfield.

Mainoo came through the Manchester United academy and is regarded as one of the club’s best young talents. Born in Stockport, he joined United at the age of six and progressed through the youth ranks before breaking into the senior team in 2023.
His rise to the first team quickly made him a fan favourite because of his calm style, ball control and maturity in midfield. He became known for receiving possession under pressure, moving through tight spaces and helping control matches.
However, Mainoo’s future looked uncertain earlier this season under former manager Ruben Amorim. He struggled for regular starts and was marginalised during that spell, leading to interest in a January loan move to Italian club Napoli. Reports said the player was open to the switch in search of more game time.
Manchester United rejected the request and made it clear they wanted him to remain at the club. Officials believed Mainoo was part of the long-term project and should compete for his place rather than leave on loan.
Since Amorim’s departure in January, Mainoo has become a regular starter under interim manager Michael Carrick. He has started all but one of the last 12 league matches, missing only the 2-1 defeat to Leeds United through injury. His increased role has helped rebuild momentum around his future.
Speaking after signing the contract, Mainoo said: “Manchester United has always been my home; this special club means everything to my family.”
He added: “I have the privilege of living my dream every single day, with the same relentless desire to succeed here as when I joined my first training session at the age of six.”
Mainoo also said he wants to help United compete for top honours again. “We can all feel the momentum building inside the club. I am determined to step up and play my role in helping Manchester United to regularly fight for major trophies in the years ahead.”
His strong club form has also helped him return to the England squad. Mainoo featured in recent friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, marking his first national team appearances since September 2024 and his first call-up since Thomas Tuchel became England manager.
United director of football Jason Wilcox praised the midfielder after the announcement. “Kobbie is one of the most naturally gifted young footballers in the world,” he said.
Wilcox added that Mainoo’s technical ability, professionalism and personality make him an example for younger academy players. He said the club believes the midfielder can develop into one of the best players in the world.
The contract news will be welcomed by supporters, who see Mainoo as an important part of United’s rebuild. A homegrown player with Premier League and international experience at just 21, he is now committed to Manchester United for the long term.
