A Glen View pastor was sentenced to nine months in prison for indecently assaulting a 19-year-old congregant. The incident occurred at a church after the victim was asked to assist with cleaning duties. Authorities condemned the abuse of trust and emphasized accountability for religious leaders.

A 44-year-old pastor from Glen View has been sentenced to an effective nine months in prison after being convicted of indecently assaulting a 19-year-old congregant, according to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).

The incident occurred on December 8, 2025, at around 10:30am after the pastor reportedly sought permission from the victim’s mother for her to assist him with cleaning duties at the church. The arrangement led to the complainant going to the church premises as agreed.

According to court proceedings, upon her arrival, the pastor hugged the complainant before proceeding to touch her inappropriately. The victim protested against the conduct, but the pastor continued with the assault despite her objections.

During the incident, the offender reportedly expressed his affection for the complainant while continuing the inappropriate behavior. The situation was interrupted by a knock on the church door, which brought the assault to an end.

After leaving the church, the complainant reported the matter to her mother. The report led to the involvement of authorities and the subsequent arrest of the pastor.

The case was brought before the Mbare Magistrates’ Court, where the pastor was tried and convicted of indecent assault. The court initially sentenced him to 12 months in prison.

However, three months of the sentence were suspended for a period of five years on condition of good behavior. This resulted in an effective prison term of nine months.

In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe condemned the actions of the pastor, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense and the breach of trust involved.

“A pastor is a respected and trusted member of society, and the offender took advantage of the victim by exploiting the trust bestowed on him,” read the statement issued by the NPAZ.

The authority further highlighted that individuals in positions of religious leadership are expected to uphold high moral standards, particularly when interacting with members of their congregations.

The case has drawn attention to issues of abuse of trust within religious settings, with the NPAZ reiterating its commitment to prosecuting such offenses and protecting vulnerable members of society.
