Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has introduced a new mobile number range, 079, as demand for its products and services grows amid the company’s network investment and expansion drive.

The new 079 SIM cards are already available at Econet shops and authorised channel partners across the country. New and existing customers can use the range to access Econet’s mobile, digital and fintech products.

“We are growing and we want our customers to grow with us,” Econet said in a statement.

“The introduction of the new number range reflects that growth as well as our commitment to ensuring that more Zimbabweans from more places around the country can connect, communicate and participate in the digital economy,” the company said.

Econet has historically operated within the 077 and 078 numbering ranges, which it said have now been exhausted as the company continues to grow.

The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz)’s most recent sector performance report, covering the first quarter, put Econet’s active subscriber base at close to 13 million customers. Market estimates put the company’s connected customer base at around 16 million.

The 079 range gives Econet additional numbering capacity as it continues to serve customers using its mobile services, high-speed data, digital financial services, business and enterprise solutions and entertainment products.

“By making additional numbers available, we are allowing more people to participate in a digitally connected future that leaves no one behind,” Econet said.

The new range comes as Econet continues to expand and upgrade its network to meet changing patterns of mobile usage and rising data demand.

The company recently committed more than US$200 million towards strengthening its network infrastructure, including expanding its 4G and 5G capacity. The investment is aimed at improving network capacity and service quality while supporting demand for high-speed connectivity across Zimbabwe.

Econet said the introduction of the 079 range forms part of its broader efforts to increase access to its services as more Zimbabweans connect to the digital economy.

Customers can select their own unique numbers from the new 079 range, subject to availability.

The new SIM cards can be obtained from Econet shops and authorised channel partners around the country.
