Econet Wireless Zimbabwe says it has reviewed its Smart4U bundle offering as part of ongoing efforts to align the product with changing customer needs and usage patterns, while also providing greater clarity on how the service operates.
The telecommunications company said the review follows increasing customer enquiries regarding why some subscribers receive different Smart4U bundle offers, why certain offers may disappear from menus, and why internet speeds can change after reaching specific usage levels.
According to Econet, Smart4U bundles are personalised offers that combine voice, data and SMS into a single package tailored to an individual customer’s usage habits. The company said the product is designed to provide value based on how customers use network services over time.

Unlike standard bundles that are available to all subscribers, Smart4U offers are generated after assessing a customer’s voice, data and SMS usage over the previous three months. As a result, available offers differ from one customer to another.
Econet explained that an individual’s Smart4U offer may increase, decrease, disappear or reappear depending on changes in their usage patterns. The company said the system continuously evaluates customer behaviour and adjusts offers accordingly.
“Smart4U is designed to provide customers with value based on their unique usage patterns,” Econet said.
“Because every customer’s needs – and therefore usage patterns – are different, the available offer per customer will vary from one subscriber to another,” the company added.
Econet said one area that requires greater customer awareness is the Fair Usage Policy (FUP), which applies to Smart4U bundles. The policy is intended to ensure a fair and consistent experience for all users on the network by managing how network resources are shared among customers.
The company explained that Fair Usage Policies are commonly used by internet and mobile broadband providers around the world. The approach is designed to prevent a small number of extremely heavy users from consuming excessive network resources and affecting service quality for other customers.
“The policy helps protect network performance, prevent inequitable use of network resources and guarantees critical access to services for all customers as data consumption continues to grow,” Econet said.
Under the policy, customers initially enjoy the highest internet speeds available in their location. However, once certain usage thresholds are reached, browsing speeds may gradually reduce in stages to help maintain overall network performance for all users in the area.
Econet said Smart4U operates through three usage stages. During the primary stage, customers access maximum available network speeds. Once the applicable Fair Usage threshold is reached, users move into a second stage where speeds are reduced. If data usage continues beyond prescribed limits, a third stage applies with a further reduction in browsing speeds.
The company noted that customers can restore browsing speeds to the maximum level available in their location by purchasing a Smart4U Top-Up bundle. The top-up option allows users to continue accessing higher-speed internet, subject to prevailing network conditions.
Econet also highlighted that internet speeds can be affected by several factors beyond Fair Usage thresholds. These include network coverage, customer location, device capability and congestion levels experienced at particular times.
The company said Smart4U bundles remain valid for 30 days or until the allocated data has been exhausted, whichever occurs first. Customers can only purchase a Smart4U bundle once per calendar month.
However, subscribers who exhaust their allocation before the expiry period ends can purchase a Smart4U Top-Up bundle. According to Econet, the top-up restores browsing speeds to the highest level available in the customer’s area, depending on network conditions at the time.
Econet also reminded customers that Smart4U bundles are non-transferable and intended only for use on the line that purchased the bundle. The company added that tethering and hotspot functions are not supported under the Smart4U offering.
Customers who wish to check their eligibility for a Smart4U bundle can do so by dialling *143#, selecting their preferred currency option and then choosing the Data and Smart4U menu options. Those who do not qualify can select from other available bundle options offered by the network.
