A 33-year-old man of no fixed abode has been sentenced to an effective 10 months in prison after stabbing a passerby in Pfupajena Township in Chegutu, according to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).

According to information provided by the NPAZ, the man attacked the woman without warning. He stabbed her on the shoulder and thigh during the assault.

Members of the public who were nearby intervened during the attack. They managed to rescue the victim from further harm and stopped the situation from escalating.

Following the incident, the matter was reported, leading to the arrest of the offender. Authorities then proceeded with investigations before bringing the case to court.

The case was heard at the Chegutu Magistrates’ Court, where the man was tried and convicted of assault. The court initially sentenced him to 13 months in prison.

However, three months of the sentence were suspended for a period of five years on condition of good behaviour. This resulted in an effective prison sentence of 10 months.

In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe condemned the act of violence and highlighted the dangers such actions pose to the public.

“Members of the public are urged to live in harmony and desist from senseless acts of violence that are avoidable,” read the statement issued by the NPAZ.

The authority emphasized the need for peaceful conflict resolution and warned against acts that endanger the lives of others in communities.

The case has once again brought attention to incidents of violence in public spaces, with authorities continuing to call on citizens to act responsibly and uphold safety within their communities.
