BREAKING:

Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo has been suspended for five matches by FIFA after the tackle that broke the leg of Canada midfielder Ismael Kone during a World Cup match in Vancouver.

Madibo received a straight red card for the challenge during Canada’s 6-0 victory over Qatar last Thursday. The suspension means the Qatar player will miss the remainder of his country’s World Cup campaign.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee announced the punishment on Wednesday, saying the suspension was issued for serious foul play. The governing body also stated that the decision remains subject to appeal.

The ban covers Qatar’s remaining matches at the tournament, including Wednesday’s fixture against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Qatar suffered a 3-1 defeat in that match at Seattle Stadium.

The incident occurred in the 51st minute when Kone was tackled from behind by Madibo. Players immediately appeared concerned as the Canadian midfielder remained on the ground holding his leg following the challenge.

Kone was eventually carried off the field on a stretcher before later undergoing surgery for fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his left leg. The injury overshadowed Canada’s first-ever World Cup victory.

Despite the seriousness of the injury, Kone acknowledged supporters inside the stadium as he was taken from the field. Sitting upright on the stretcher, he waved to fans who responded with loud applause and support.

Canada midfielder Nathan Saliba, who replaced Kone during the match, paid tribute to his teammate after scoring Canada’s fourth goal. Saliba ran to the sideline, held up a replica of Kone’s Canada jersey and pointed to the injured player’s number eight.

Madibo was visibly emotional following the incident. The Qatar midfielder was seen crying on the pitch with his hands behind his head as teammates gathered around to comfort him after the red card was shown.

Canada coach Jesse Marsch later revealed that Madibo personally visited Kone in the dressing room after the match to apologise for the challenge. The gesture was later followed by another visit involving the Qatar player and Qatar’s sports minister.

Kone later thanked supporters through a message posted on Instagram. “You can’t even imagine how grateful I am to everyone who reached out and that has me in their prayers,” he wrote.

The Qatar Football Association said Madibo and the country’s sports minister visited Kone to check on his condition following surgery. The association said they were received by the President of the Canadian Soccer Association during the visit.

“This visit reflects the spirit of sportsmanship and the strong relationships on and off the field. We wish the player a speedy recovery and a quick return to the pitch,” the Qatar Football Association said.

Photographs released by the association showed Kone, who was using a wheelchair, embracing Madibo while both players wore their national team jerseys. The images highlighted the efforts made by both sides to show support following the incident.

Kone remained with the Canadian team and was seen supporting his teammates from the sidelines during Canada’s 2-1 defeat to Switzerland at BC Place in Vancouver on Wednesday.

While Madibo’s suspension is significant, it is not among the longest disciplinary bans issued during a World Cup. One of the most notable cases involved Luis Suarez, who received a nine-match suspension and a four-month ban from all football-related activities after biting Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Another major World Cup disciplinary case occurred in 1994 when Mauro Tassotti was suspended for eight matches following an elbowing incident involving Luis Enrique.
