The suspect has been identified as Benjamin Manyangadze, aged 20, of Ruwa. Police said he had been released from Marondera Prison on March 2, where he was serving a sentence for six counts of unlawful entry and theft.
According to Insp Mahoko, the offence was committed on March 11 at around 5 pm in Redcliff. The complainant, Tawanda Godfrey Magure, had his house broken into while he was away.
“Stolen from inside the house were car keys of a Peugeot, US$1 800 cash, a techno cellphone and other items of property,” said Insp Mahoko. “The criminal then stole the Peugeot, which was parked in the yard and drove it away.”
Police investigations later led to a breakthrough on March 16, when detectives spotted the stolen motor vehicle being driven along the Chinhoyi–Chegutu Road.
“The police detectives roped in ZRP Murombedzi to assist, resulting in the motor vehicle being intercepted at Murombedzi Business Centre,” he said.
Manyangadze was subsequently arrested, and the stolen motor vehicle along with the techno cellphone were recovered. The total value of stolen property is estimated at US$9 920, while recovered items are valued at US$7 500.
