The Biography

Robert Gabriel Mugabe was one of the most internationally recognised figures in Zimbabwean history. He became the first Prime Minister of independent Zimbabwe in 1980 after the Lancaster House settlement and British-supervised elections, then served as executive President from 1987 until 2017. Mugabe was born on 21 February 1924 in Kutama, Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. Britannica records that he was trained as a teacher in a Roman Catholic mission school, studied at the University College of Fort Hare in South Africa, taught in Ghana between 1956 and 1960, and acquired law degrees by correspondence during his imprisonment. His public legacy includes a major role in Black nationalist politics and the liberation struggle against white-minority rule in Rhodesia. Britannica describes him as one of the leading Black nationalist figures of that period and records his role in ZANU and the Patriotic Front during the transition to internationally recognised independence on 18 April 1980. In the first years after independence, the early Mugabe government pursued reconciliation and social investment. Britannica notes that his early prime ministership included a coalition approach, constitutional guarantees for white parliamentary representation, improved wages, expanded social services and food subsidies, while the national history account records large spending needs in education, health and social services for the Black majority. Mugabe also remained an important Pan-African figure beyond Zimbabwe. In 2015 he became Chairperson of the African Union. The AU described him during that period as a prominent figure of the African liberation movement and recorded his message that African institutions should work for an integrated, united and prosperous continent.
