The Biography

Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa is the President of Zimbabwe and one of the most prominent post-independence political figures. He was sworn in as Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces on 24 November 2017, after the resignation of former president Robert Gabriel Mugabe, and began his second term after a swearing-in ceremony in Harare on 4 September 2023. Born on 15 September 1942 in the Zvishavane area. His early story is closely tied to education, legal training and liberation politics. Presidential Communications records that he began his schooling at Lundi Primary School before his family relocated to Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia. He later studied law, was admitted to the Bar of the High Court of Zambia in 1976, and is publicly described by the Office of the President and Cabinet as an accomplished lawyer. His political career began in nationalist youth and liberation movements in the 1960s. He joined ZAPU in 1962 and later aligned with ZANU after the party split. Official biography material records military training in Tanzania, Egypt and China during the liberation era. After independence, he held several senior public offices, including Minister of National Security, Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Speaker of Parliament from 2000 to 2005, Minister of Rural Housing and Social Amenities, Minister of Defence, and Vice President of Zimbabwe from 2014. As president, Mnangagwa has promoted messages around economic development, investment engagement, infrastructure, agriculture and national building. The Zimbabwe Embassy in Washington describes the President as urging the diaspora to join hands in national development, while SADC recorded his second-term address as focusing on nation building, development projects, food security, service delivery, infrastructure modernisation, health and education. Regionally, Mnangagwa became Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community on 17 August 2024 during the 44th Ordinary SADC Summit held in Harare. SADC states that the chairperson provides policy direction at the highest level of the regional bloc, placing Mnangagwa in a visible diplomatic role across Southern Africa.
